CONDÉ Maryse

Guadeloupe

publié le 6 mai 2008.

Maryse Condé is a great lady of literature. She was born in 1937 in Guadeloupe and married Mamadou Condé, an actor of African origin, in 1959. She went to Africa, Guinea, Ghana and Senegal to teach before settling in France in the late 1970s. In 1985, she obtained a Fulbright grant to teach in the United States and spent a year in Los Angeles. In 1986, she went back to Guadeloupe but without breaking her ties with the United States. Her 13 works of fiction (translated in various languages) have brought her a lot of awards, for example the Grand Prix littéraire de la femme (1986) and the prix Yourcenar (1999). With her husband Richard Philcox, she divides her time between New York, where she is a teacher at Columbia University, and Guadeloupe. She has published more than twenty books such as Ségou, Célanine cou-coupé, La Belle Créole et Histoire de la femme cannibale. Maryse Condé was the first woman to receive, for her whole work, the Putterbaugh prize given in the United-States to a writer in the French language.
