Valerio Evangelisti was born on June 20, 1952 in Italy. He is a historian by training but became a researcher in political science at the university of Bologna where he resides. A fan of popular literature, Evangelisti turned to novel writing after having published several historical and sociological essays. If one can actually talk about a militant sci-fi genre, then Evangelisti is a part of that movement. He is one of the leaders of a new generation of Italian novelists and was the first fantasy writer ever to have had one his stories serialised in La Reppublica. He is above all the author of the flamboyant and romantic very hot series staging Nicolas Eymerich, the great inquisitor. The series was awarded the prestigious Urania prize when its first volume was released in 1994 as well as other awards traditionnaly given to Anglo-Saxon writers, such as prix Tour Eiffel in 1998,and the Grand Prix de l’Imaginaire in 1999. With a surprising mix of genres – horror, science-fiction and historical – Evangelisti is contributing to a renewal of literature of the imagination. And with his latest novel, he is returning to the very essence of the noir genre.

Synopsis of Noi saremo tutto or Nous ne sommes rien soyons tout ! (For the French translation) :

In the troubled nineteen twenties, a powerful union movement was born in the USA. Eddie Lombardo, a young Italian-American fist drawn to pimping decides to opt instead for a career as an informer for the union bosses. Eddie decides to change his name to Florio to break with his communist family. He is violent and ruthless and quickly goes up the echelons of the International Longshoremen’s Association of New York, famous for protecting the interests of the shipping magnates over and above those of the longshoremen. Eddie is a master blackmailer and extorsionist and is just as capable of starting a strike as he is of ending one. He never hesitates to lend a hand to his powerful mafia bosses nor to use women in order to his satisfy his baser instincts and then cynically get rid of them. But things change with the war and crime syndicates too. Even though Eddie has spent the better part of his life fighting the reds, Maccarthyism is no help to him. He has become too cumbersome, too visible because of his horrible ways and so loses the trust of the godfathers. And in that world, it is better not to be alone. It is a very ambitious book on the rise and fall of a mafia lieutenant, a saga that paints a vivid picture of years of social struggles hijacked by criminals. Noi saremo tutto revives the tradition of the noir genre and revisits its key elements, the Depression, gangrenous unionism, dishonest politicians and the immigrants who will pave the way for the gangsters. Valerio Evangelisti, who is already very famous for his medieval sagas featuring Eymerich the inquisitor and Nostradamus, had already dealt with the birth of the USA in his Antracite. He is following, without any hint of romanticism, in the footsteps of his glorious predecessors, Hammett, Burnett and McCoy.

Synopsis of Picatrix, la scala per l’inferno or Picatrix, l’échelle par l’enfer (for the French translation) :

The book takes the reader to Saragossa in 1361. Anyone who takes possession of the Picatrix, a text on the occult sciences, gets killed immediately by monsters with dogs’ heads while great luminous wheels appear in the sky. In order to find the solution to this great mystery, Nicolas Eymerich, the Great Inquisitor will need to enter the Arab kingdom of Granada. He prepares to enter very reluctantly into this refined and complex islamic world that he considers totally heretical guided by a young Jew converted to Christianism. On the way to Granada, Eymerich crosses paths with the greatest philosophers and Oriental mystics of the times, from Ibn Khaldûn to Al-Farabi, and will confront real horror when he finds the solution to the terrifying murders. Centuries later, similar luminous wheels will rise over Africa while in Sierra Leone, Euroforce mercenaries will cause the massive exodus of the children of the sand of the Temme tribe towards Liberia and the Bouganda Empire. And in the Canary Islands, professor Marcus Frullifer, drawn along by an attractive scientific journalist, will witness a strange phenomenon, once a year, at the time of the Devil’s festival, the patients at the local psychiatric clinic start barking. The three stories will becompe inextricably linked to create a diabolic puzzle …

Rivages - 2013
